Lycopene is a lipophilic, biologically active, unsaturated carotenoid. It has antiatherosclerotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive,
antiplatelet and anti-apoptotic actions. Lycopene also improves endothelial functions and reduces arterial stiffness. Lycopene contributes to the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disorders.

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring red carotenoid pigment found in microalgae and seafood. Astaxanthin produces powerful antioxidant activities by quenching singlet oxygen and scavenging free radicals. Astaxanthin has been reported to inhibit LDL oxidation and to increase HDL-cholesterol and adiponectin levels in clinical studies. Accumulating evidence suggests that astaxanthin could exert preventive actions against atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease via its potential to improve oxidative stress, inflammation, lipid metabolism, and glucose metabolism.
