Viruses are microorganisms consisting of small genetic material (either DNA or RNA) coated by a protein layer. They cannot reproduce on their own and depend entirely on host cells — including humans, plants, and animals — for survival. Viral infections are among the most common causes of illness worldwide, ranging from the common cold to life-threatening diseases like HIV and COVID-19.
What Is a Viral Infection?
A viral infection occurs when a harmful virus multiplies inside host cells. Viruses introduce their genetic material into host cells, hijack them, and start producing copies—causing the host cells to eventually burst and die. Symptoms of viral infections include cell damage, tissue damage, and disruption of the immune response. Viruses are classified as either DNA or RNA viruses, with RNA viruses like HIV being highly capable of mutation.
How Do Viruses Spread?
Viruses can spread through multiple routes — touch, saliva, airborne droplets, sexual contact, contaminated needles, insect bites (via mosquitoes and flies), and contaminated food and water. The type of virus determines its primary mode of transmission and how contagious it is.
Respiratory Viral Infections
Respiratory viral infections are among the most contagious, spreading via droplets and affecting the lungs, nose, and throat.
Common Cold: Caused by more than 200 different viruses. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, mild headache, fever, and sore throat, typically lasting up to 3 weeks.
Seasonal Influenza: Affects 5–20% of the U.S. population annually, hospitalizing around 200,000 people per year. Symptoms are more severe than a cold and often include body aches, high fever, and extreme fatigue.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Causes both upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Most dangerous for infants, young children, and elderly adults.
SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19): A global pandemic first reported in Wuhan, China, that infected millions worldwide. Symptoms include cough, fever, shortness of breath, and pneumonia. WHO preventive measures include regular handwashing, covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and wearing masks in public.
Viral Skin Infections
Molluscum Contagiosum: Causes small, flesh-colored lesions most often in children aged 1–10 years. Lumps usually disappear without treatment within 6–12 months.
Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1): Spreads through saliva via kissing or sharing food and drink. An estimated 85% of people in the U.S. are infected with HSV-1 by age 60.
Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV): Responsible for chickenpox, causing itching, blisters, fatigue, chills, and high fever. The chickenpox vaccine is 97% effective at preventing infection. Those who have had chickenpox are at risk of developing shingles later in life.
Viral Food Poisoning (Gastrointestinal Viruses)
Hepatitis A: Infects the liver, causing yellow skin, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Up to 20% of infected individuals experience recurrent illness within six months.
Norovirus: A common cause of severe gastrointestinal illness, particularly reported on cruise ships.
Rotavirus most commonly affects young children and, along with norovirus, is responsible for many cases of gastroenteritis—inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
Sexually Transmitted Viral Infections
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): The most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. Some strains cause genital warts; others increase the risk of cervical cancer. Vaccination can protect against cancer-causing strains.
Hepatitis B: Transmitted through contaminated blood and bodily fluids. The hepatitis B vaccine is more than 90% effective at preventing infection.
Genital Herpes (HSV-2): A common sexually transmitted infection with no cure. Antiviral medications can reduce the number and duration of outbreaks.
HIV: Affects specific T cells of the immune system, progressively reducing the body’s ability to fight disease and eventually leading to AIDS if untreated.
Viruses and Cancer
Because viruses insert themselves into host cell DNA, they can contribute to several types of cancer. Viruses linked to cancer include Epstein-Barr virus (nasopharyngeal cancer and lymphomas), Hepatitis B and C (liver cancer), HIV (Kaposi sarcoma and lymphomas), Human Papillomavirus—HPV (cervical cancer), and Human T-lymphotropic virus-1—HTLV-1 (T-cell leukemia).
Treatment for Viral Infections
Many viral infections resolve on their own without medical treatment. Antiviral medications are available for specific viruses — they work by inhibiting the production of new virus particles, blocking viral DNA replication, or preventing viruses from entering host cells. Antivirals are most effective when taken early in the infection. They are used to treat chickenpox, shingles, HSV-1, HSV-2, HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and influenza.
Prevention — Vaccination Is Key
Timely vaccination significantly reduces the risk of acquiring many viral infections. Vaccines are available for influenza, hepatitis A and B, chickenpox, shingles, HPV, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), polio, rabies, rotavirus, and more. Some vaccines require booster shots to maintain long-term immunity. Combined with good hygiene practices, vaccination remains the most powerful tool for preventing the spread of viral diseases.
